READ MY LIPS
by LUCY SM JOHNSTON
Emblematic of expressions of love, sexuality, intimacy, and all types of communication, the fixation on female mouths as fashion accessory has run throughout history. Their prominence today in their present iteration is popularised by the Instagram generation and the fake cartoonish augmented ideals of a beauty standard that have been rejected in these works.
Taking inspiration from pre 90’s era lips before the vogue for cosmetic surgery, they are deliberately disembodied and dominating the space; powerful, expressive, voracious. A reworking of the airbrush aesthetic, they are far from perfect despite being adorned in lipstick through the application of acrylic paint playfully subverts their retro styling. Each lip print is as unique as a fingerprint and they all have something to say and demand you sit up and take notice.
